20 Jun Simple Living: First Steps
There are many reasons that I chose to move, but one of the most important is to live a more simple life. I know there are numerous websites and books on how to live a “Simple Life” but I like to do things my way, which means not reading any of these, just figuring out what it means for me.
My very first “step” was realizing that I wanted to fit my lifestyle around my business rather than finding a job that allowed me to continue the lifestyle I was used to. That meant drastically cutting my living expenses and one of the easiest ways to do that was to move.
I originally purchased my current house 18 years ago with my husband and two very young girls. It was the perfect home for my family and the size was practical for us and our budget. However, now I am living in this great big house with only a dog and a few cats. I was blessed to be able to stay in this house long enough after my husband’s death to see both girls through high school. But now that they have moved on to their own homes and lives, it is time for me (and the menagerie) to move.
When I was looking for a new home, there were three main criteria: it had to be within an hour from Leesburg, it had to be significantly smaller, and it had to be very inexpensive. I needed to not have a mortgage on this new house in order to live debt free!
Thankfully, I was able to find the perfect house in Hagerstown and I fall in love with it more and more each day! It needed some rehab, but it allowed me to make it mine. There will always be new projects to do, but I plan to pace myself and enjoy the process.
As I continue my journey towards a more simple life, I will share my successes, my failures, and everything I am learning through this process. I’m only at the beginning of this journey, but I’m excited to see where it leads me!
